Nowadays, organisations need to be socially responsible by assessing their social impacts and/or performances and those of their supply chain actors in order to achieve competitive advantages. In this perspective, they should be aware of the different available methods and tools that can be used to take socially responsible decisions.The aim of this study is to provide a useful toolbox within Supply Chain Management in order to help decision makers to assess systematically the social sustainability of organisations. For this reason, an analysis of existing methods and tools was performed by following the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines” (PRISMA).Indeed, the cooperation of the management activities throughout the supply chain can meet long-term corporate objectives in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability (Mentzer et al., 2001; Seuring and Mülller, 2008; Lin and Tseng, 2016; Fallahpour et al., 2017).Social sustainability addresses human well-being not only for current but also for future generations. In this perspective, social sustainability is “the management of practices, capabilities, stakeholders and resources to address human potential and welfare both within and outside the communities of the supply chain” (Nakamba et al., 2017:527).

To that end, increasing resilience of UK medicines supply chains remains a priority for the government. This spans activity within the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England but also areas of trade, international co-operation and industrial strategy.
These arrangements were formalised from 2022 to 2025 through agency agreements between DHSC and the Northern Ireland Executive, Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The agency agreements are ongoing and give the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care powers to take medicines supply decisions on behalf of the whole UK in the event of any emergencies where there is agreement by Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.In parallel, DHSC engaged with the NHS and devolved governments to develop procedures to better prepare for future disruptions, including agreements to allow quicker movement between suppliers. A National Patient Safety Alert was issued to the NHS and other organisations, including independent providers of health and social care, which provided comprehensive management advice for clinicians across the UK on how to manage and prioritise patients affected by these shortages.However, the reality is that medicine shortages continue to present challenges to patient care at the global scale. We must do more to ensure the medicines supply chain functions better so that patients experience less interruption and anxiety as to when, where and how they can access their medicines.Our efforts to improve the management of medicines shortages and strengthen supply chain resilience are crucial to reinventing the NHS and enhancing patient care - from increasing access to shortage information at the point of prescribing, to the role of pharmacists, exploring where an alternative product could be supplied without needing to return to the prescriber.

It is now commonly accepted that there exists a form of drug supply, that involves the non-commercial supply of drugs to friends and acquaintances for little or no profit, which is qualitatively different from profit motivated ‘drug dealing proper’. ‘Social supply’, as it has become known, has a strong conceptual footprint in the United Kingdom, shaped by empirical research, policy discussion and its accommodation in legal frameworks.In situ social supply experts addressed a common set of questions regarding the nature of social supply for their particular context including: an overview of social supply research activity, reflection on the extent that differentiation is accommodated in drug supply sentencing frameworks; evaluating the extent to which social supply is recognised in legal discourse and in sentencing practices and more broadly by e.g.A thematic analysis of these scripts was undertaken and emergent themes were developed. Whilst having an absence of local research, New Zealand is also included in the analysis as there exists a genuine discursive presence of social supply in the drug control and sentencing policy contexts in that country.Findings suggest that while social supply has been found to exist as a real and distinct behaviour, its acceptance and application in criminal justice systems ranges from explicit through to implicit. Aims: Describes how the relative normalisation of recreational drug use in the UK has been productive of, and fused with, the relatively normalised and non-commercial social supply of recreational drugs. Methods: Semi-structured interviews with 60 social suppliers of recreational drugs in two studies (involving a student population n = 30 and general population sample n = 30).Respondents were recruited via purposive snowball sampling and local advertising. Findings: Both samples provided strong evidence of the normalised supply of recreational drugs in micro-sites of friendship and close social networks.Many social suppliers described “drift” into social supply and normalised use was suggested to be productive of supply relationships that both suppliers and consumers regard as something less than “real” dealing in order to reinforce their preconceptions of themselves as relatively non-deviant.Conclusions: The fairly recent context of relative normalisation of recreational drug use has coalesced with the social supply of recreational drugs in micro-sites of use and exchange whereby a range of “social” supply acts (sometimes even involving large amounts of drugs/money) have become accepted as something closer to gift-giving or friendship exchange dynamics within social networks rather than dealing proper.

Concerns about social sustainability issues such as child labour, inequality, excessive overtime, and abusive working and living conditions in developing countries' manufacturing sectors have prompted an urgent study on sustainable social supply chain practices.The social pillar of sustainability has then been unnoticed, favouring the more regularly discussed environmental and economic dimensions. This study aims to expand the social sustainability framework to investigate the impact of sustainable social supply chain practices on firm social performance.The electronic survey was conducted on firms that adopted sustainable social practices. The 144 data sets were received from manufacturing firms. The data were analysed using structural equation modelling with PLS-SEM to examine domains and outcomes of sustainable supply chain practices.The result found that social supply chain practices impact the firm's social performance. However, the results indicate that the social element of sustainable procurement does not affect the firm social performance. The results show social fairness challenged manufacturing firms to comply with sustainable production and distribution.
